JBM Music: Manchester Cathedral Concert Production

For nearly a decade, Neuron has been working alongside JBM Music & Events, supporting their vision to bring world-class live music experiences to unique spaces across the UK. Over that time, we’ve watched JBM grow from strength to strength, building a reputation for imaginative programming, unforgettable atmospheres, and legendary line-ups.

Since 2022, one of the standout collaborations between Neuron and JBM Music has been the Echos concert series at Manchester Cathedral. A venue steeped in history and character, the Cathedral is both awe-inspiring and technically challenging, an environment where audio, lighting, and staging need to be carefully considered to respect the building’s heritage while still delivering the energy of a full-scale live show. It’s a delicate balance, and one we’re proud to have mastered together.

A large church interior with high arched ceilings and stained glass windows is set up for a JBM Music concert. Sound and lighting control panels are in the foreground, facing a stage with instruments and colourful lighting.

Chapter 01 BRIEF

A Venue Like No Other

Manchester Cathedral, Architectural Marvel

Manchester Cathedral isn’t your standard gig space. It’s an architectural marvel with centuries of history, a fully active place of worship, and one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city. For audiences, it provides a breathtaking backdrop. For production crews, it demands care, creativity, and technical precision.

Load-ins and builds have to work around the Cathedral’s daily services. Rigging needs to be sensitive to the ornate architecture. Sightlines are sacred. And every technical choice must complement, not compete with, the venue’s acoustics and atmosphere.

This is where Neuron comes in, striking a balance between respecting the Cathedral’s unique identity and delivering a concert-level experience for world-renowned artists programmed by JBM Music.

Chapter 02 DESIGN

A Partnership That’s Grown Over Time

A Decade of Collaboration

Our journey with JBM Music began nearly ten years ago, and since then, the partnership has evolved into a seamless and collaborative relationship. We’ve been trusted to handle sound, lighting, and staging across a diverse portfolio of shows, adapting to the unique needs of different artists, genres, and audiences.

At the Cathedral, that partnership has flourished. JBM first brought us on board in 2022 for a run of shows that set the tone for what was possible in this extraordinary space. Since then, we’ve supported an impressive list of artists, including Sasha, John Digweed, The Shapeshifters, Jocelyn Brown, Heather Small, Lighthouse Family, Boney M, Aswad, and Todd Terje. Each event has reinforced the Cathedral as a cultural destination within Manchester’s thriving music scene.

Looking ahead, the momentum continues. This Autumn alone will see an exciting line-up featuring Sister Sledge, Tunde from Lighthouse Family, B*Witched, Peter Andre, Marvin Humes x Dappy, Maxi Priest & David Rodigan, Vengaboys, and Heather Small and Boney M returning once again.

Chapter 03 INSTALL

The Sound of Excellence

Clarity in a Challenging Space

At the heart of every Neuron production is sound, and in a space like Manchester Cathedral, there’s no room for compromise. To deliver both clarity and power, we deploy our Danley Sound Labs system, which combines high-output SH96HO mains with TH118XL subs that give the low end real presence. Monitoring on stage is handled with compact yet powerful Martin Audio LE200 wedges, giving artists the confidence they need in such an acoustically complex environment. Driving the PA system are amplifiers from Powersoft, ensuring clean and reliable amplification throughout.

At FOH and monitors, we rely on Allen & Heath’s dLive platform, which gives our engineers the flexibility to respond to the wide range of artists and genres programmed by JBM. We have the capacity to cater to specific technical rider requests, such as the DiGiCo Quantum 326 with Waves integration or the Shure Axient wireless system, which we recently integrated seamlessly into our house setup.

The result is a sound experience that respects the Cathedral’s acoustics while still delivering the full impact demanded by headline artists. Audiences get every note, every vocal, every beat, precisely as it was meant to be heard.

“

We’ve worked with Neuron Audio Visual for many years across a number of events, and they always deliver to the highest standard. Their team is reliable, professional, and handles every job with great care, meaning I don’t have to worry about the production side at all. They consistently make the process smooth and stress-free, and that’s why we continue to work with them year after year. Highly recommend!

Staging and Lighting: Respecting the Space

Staging That Respects the Building

Staging in the Cathedral is about finding the sweet spot between presence and subtlety. For these concerts, we construct a 24ft by 16ft stage, large enough to accommodate full bands and production needs, but proportioned so it doesn’t overwhelm the interior.

Lighting is equally considered. Rather than flying fixtures from the rafters, everything is rigged from the ground, maintaining the Cathedral’s clean sightlines and preserving the integrity of its interior architecture. The majestic organ serves as a natural focal point behind the stage, which we accentuate with washes and beams that shift the mood and energy as each performance unfolds. We opted for fixtures from brands such as Robe, Chauvet Professional, Chroma-Q and Portman, all controlled by an Avolites Arena. Together, they enable us to create dynamic, immersive lighting effects while preserving the Cathedral’s natural beauty.

Chapter 05 CHAPTER 05

Overcoming Challenges

Working Around an Active Cathedral

Working in a venue as historic and actively used as Manchester Cathedral means challenges are inevitable. Load-ins are timed around daily services, so our crews must be efficient and flexible. Noise tests and rehearsals must be carefully scheduled and coordinated. Rigging restrictions limit the placement of fixtures, demanding creative problem-solving.

But challenges often spark creativity. By embracing the Cathedral’s limitations, we’ve developed production approaches that are not only respectful but also enhance the audience’s experience. The result is an intimate, immersive concert environment unlike anything else in the city.

Where Programming Meets Production

For audiences, the combination of JBM Music’s artist programming, the Cathedral’s grandeur, and Neuron’s production expertise creates an unforgettable experience.
